I know a dog who has a silent bark and hold. I guess it's fine in SchH, if the dog shows power, and intense focus on the decoy. (I've also heard you'll be likely to loose some points from most judges for it? I dunno, just repeating what I've been told) Apparently this dog was trained to do a silent guard because she sounds like a chihuahua when she barks (Dog in question is a small-ish Dutch Shepherd)
I have NO idea how it was trained though. I'd guess rather then rewarding a consistent steady bark, you'd reward progressively longer periods of silent guarding?
I doubt it. The current trainer/handler of the dog didn't train or title her- he bought her recently (within the last year? or so) and did not seem to get a lot of information with her. I'm not sure he's a clue how it was trained, but he did show me why it was. She really does sound dumb when she barks. NOT a scary/intimidating sound in the least! Her stare down is much more powerful.
Sorry I can't be more then a tease with the information that it's possible, but I don't know how.... lol.
We had a Chessie in the 1980's and she definitely gave anyone entering the house pause. She was great with people she knew but no stranger would have gotten away "unpunished" if they'd been foolish enough to try and enter without permission.
