A link written by DVM's to explain what they look for in blood panels. Breaks down the meaning of the ominous blood panel.
I am so grateful for sites like these (and this forum), because I can then ask my vet educated and informed questions. Education goes a long way in fighting disease. The more you know...Also seems to keep the vet on his toes.
He just called me again, and said they did the blood transfusion, and they will start on the xrays, but that he didn't think that there is a foreign body. I asked him what he thought his chances were, and he would not answer the question. He said that he pup needs to eat sometime and that they are doing everything that they can. He also said that the pup has a fever now.
What should I do? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />
I am not trying to start up anything again about this poor pup's breeder but have they checked in with the pup's other littermates to see if there is any problems with them?
Some other people have asked, and I did not see an answer, what were the results of the blood panel? Could you post them? They look something like this:
Perhaps some of the knowledgable people on this list can brainstorm if we had the results. I find it strange that a vet would automatically rule out obstruction. Has he had an ultrasound. That is one thing that I would do. Not only would it show an obstruction but it would also show if any of the organs were enlarged etc.
The breeder said that all of his littermates are fine. I tried to call the vet back and ask about the blood test results, but he was out of the office, so I will get the results tonight.
Do you guys think that this could just be stress related? The pup was shipped from germany to colorado, 4-5 days later shipped to me. (Pensacola, FL very different climate.) Then I gave him 2 baths. (I know I shouldn't of, but I didn't know, and he was real dirty from being in an outside kennel in colorado. Then 5 days passed, and he spent the weekend at that one vet. Then when I brought him home he had diarreah and vomiting, and looked like he just wanted to go in my girlfriends room. Then we took him to the other hospital where he is now.
He is by himself in this little room that smells horrid, locked in a cage by himself. He looked so sad when I was leaving yesterday, he kept looking at me through the window on the door when I was leaving.
Also, have they done a culture test for Campy? There was something going around the Pacific NW that was later diagnosed as Campy and it just occurred to me to post it on this thread. Here is some general info that one of the people with the affected dogs wrote:
Campylobactor has 22 strains of this crud, and Can Only Be Diagnosed "properly" by a culture test. Has to be done by a Specialty Lab, that knows and can run the culture test. Most VETS, don't have the proper equipment, or knowledgable
person to do this culture. Although, most will know the name of the crud, BUT Most don't think it is prevalent or in their area.
