Jim…. If I had to pick one aspect to give you kudos on it would be your unit’s tracking. Your patrol guys set up outstanding perimeters and the actual tracking is really impressive for the dense residential we keep seeing on the show. Good line handling… some real easy to read dogs… great resilience to distractions. Hats off!
I have a question for the K-9 handlers out there. I have only seen one episode so far (St Paul). Dogs and handlers were amazing, in my inexperienced eyes.
When the dog finds the subject and alerts, but then doesn't get the bite, how do you relieve that tension/build-up?

During training, not every scenario ends in a bite. So it's not a situation the dog is not used to. They know, because of training, they will, at some point, get a bite. Sort of a variable reward.

Thanks , our tracking has come a long ways . When I started on the K9 Unit 11 years ago we trained for tracking but on most searches we worked the dog off lead on area searches .
Since then we have put more emphasis on tracking and our head trainer is really skilled at training this and most of our guys pick it up eventually .
Your right most of our dogs are easy to read . 1 of our dogs on the unit however gives little indication when in and out of a track . Once in odor he still gives little physical indication (will give verbal) to odor during a search . Good dog finds lots of badguys , engages great , just little indication .
If anything I wish the show would put more emphasis on how important the patrol officers are to a K9 Units success . Our guys are great . Most love working with us and call on us often .

Lynne ,
David pretty much answered it . With a real find the reward is verbal . May not be as rewarding for the dog as it would like but along with our training and the numerous ways the dog is rewarded it's enough . Through training we are always keeping the dog thinking he's going to find a badguy and will be rewarded some how . After a real find they are revevved up but they soon calm down and want to go out and find more badguys . They don't focus on that last find they simply want to go out and find more .
