They claim that this is the fist time in NY that a coyote has tested positive. This coyote a very short time later attacked a young boy in the same neighborhood. The boy the 2 yr old girl, her father & mother (that kissed her little girls boo boo) are all getting the rabies series injections.
The coyote was a female & they think that part of her persisitance may have been contributed by the need to feed pups. If so, they will also be rabies posititve. Thee must have been some reason that they suspected this (the pups)...maybe they have been heard at night by neighbors. Don't know. Any case not good.
Good grief! (Actually, I agree with Ross... Holy crap.)
You could be right Anne about the female coyote's desire to feed her pups, but rabies does crazy things to their brains. What a mess for everyone involved, but thank goodness we have gammaglobulin!

Wow- live bat in a paper bag.... Someone disliked him! (or didn't realize what a horrible thing that is to do)
My dad is the guy at the county who does rabies testing lab prep on animals that are brought in. So someone from the county we figure brought in a paper bag with a live bat in it and said this is for Mel and set it on his desk with a post-it that said rabies testing. Well... so they figured it was nothing and just set it on his desk.
Dad came back from the field and saw the bag on his desk, opened the bag... SURPRISE!! It wasn't even Halloween. Usually the animals he gets brought in are in a plastic bag, already dead, and decapitated.
