... I just got the distinct impression from a couple of folks that I should have just left it alone unless I could positively determine that the dog was in distress, that's all.
I didn't get that impression at all.
I'm kind of stunned that we're seven pages into this. I think the original post asked for opinions and received them, from "I never would have thought that a dog who isn't wet, isn't hairless, and is sheltered would be in any distress from cold for the length of time that people stay in a gym" to "911?!" and all over in between, with a ton of "but when in doubt, act - go with your gut" ... and I don't think there was ANY hint of "first determine positively that the dog is in distress." This is a board that considers the dog's welfare first in just about every situation that doesn't involve an endangered child.
So -- differences of opinion. Exactly what was requested. Hurtful? I don't see it.
I may have taken some of the last posts a little more to heart than usual. Yes, after being 7 pages in to it I was quite overwhelmed. I really never expected it to go this far.
I do know that the majority on here have said "when in doubt - go with your gut" and "you had the dog's best interest at heart".
People also brought up some very valuable points and information that I can use if and when faced with this type of situation again whether it be freezing temps or extreme heat. Extreme heat I would never ignore and I would have probably gone straight back in and found the owner and then called the police if they weren't going to remove the dog from the situation.
Yes, I did ask for opinions, but I just never expected it to go quite this far :-)
