As I recall, Will had a rather hard-core Mal that he named Buttercup.
My young female was the first one I had that didn't come pre-named. Registration names don't really count. Dallas always hung her head when I called her by her registered name.
She became Nikki. I made up a rule of no more than two sylables with hard consonants on the theory it is more likely to be heard in windy conditions. 'sides, I liked the sound of Nikki and it honored her pa.
I think she later came to believe her first name was actually, Dammit.
One of the better handler/dog name combos I've seen recently was Joel Monroe's National's dog, Shocks.

Hahahaha!!! I grew up thinking my middle name was Dammit!
"Six strangers are unaccountably seized by nightmares, attacks of fear, and bouts of uncharacteristic behavior. The six begin to seek each other out as puzzling photographs and messages arrive, indicating that the cause may lie in a forgotten weekend stay at an isolated Nevada motel. Koontz has topped a fine roster of horror and suspense novels with an almost unbearably suspenseful page-turner. His ability to maintain the mystery through several plot twists is impressive, as is his array of believable and sympathetic characters."
OK, skip that last line.
That's us! Dean Koontz can write it. People Named Dammit; the Dark Dog-Board Truth.
ROFL. mine is Dammit as well!
It is not a family name though- my sister got a normal middle name (Ann)... and straight A's to go with it. I was the only one blessed with it, besides the dog. He had 2 middle names, GOD, then DAMMIT! His last name was 'golaydown'
