Would any of the cleaning products you use do this? Only saying a friends cat can't be around certain cleaners and if they are itch like crazy even after contact a few days later. all I know is that I am terribly allergic to cleaners to the point I will itch till I bleed for two to three days later. They give me a steroid cream for the itching. Can they give these kind of topical creams to dogs??
Also, if you checked any game farm they might be able to help you with pheasant, partridge, etc.. Also you might want to try (don't know how closely they are related to chickens but....) chuckers are a really cheap bird and breed like mad. Also try crows or pigeons. I don't know about VA but around here if there really isn't a " dnr " season on these thing at least to my knowledge.
Sorry poor Falcon isn't feeling better. Sending him non-itching healing vibes.

Barbara, could you just treat Falcon with the Ivermectin and keep using the Revolution for Sadie?

The concern with the Revolution was the possibility of resistant mites since we didn't see any improvement during the two courses of using it.

My experience with the spot on treatments, they never seem to treat for the 30 days, more like 3 weeks? Then ...
Good Luck! I'd just really think about re-infestion, whith the way scabies is so Contagious!!

The protocol for treatment of mites is every two weeks for 2-3 weeks.

This thread took an interesting (and thoughtful) turn.
The discussion with the vet about mites and also about the order of testing protocols sure does sound like a good next step.
I have a strong gut feeling (haha) about this looking nothing like food allergies. Again, of course it's possible, but there is so little (like zero) pointing to food allergies that maybe I too would want to be clear in my mind about whether checking the food test off the list right now is the best next step.
And of course, the vet may have a reason we have no idea of for doing the food trial now.

Thanks Connie. I'm typing out symptoms and what we've already tried treatment wise, and some of the ideas suggested here before calling the vet again on Monday. (I decided to not bother her on the weekend since this isn't an emergency.)
I don't think it is food.
I'm leaning more toward mites, yet he doesn't have any bare spots on face or ears, like you'd normally see with mange. The reason I'm having a hard time letting this go is that our other dog Sadie, who was not showing ANY symptoms when this all began, is occassionally scratching her ears and nibbling on her front legs. Not a lot, but I've noticed it. In addition, other than purchasing new beds when starting the lime sulphur, we've done nothing to treat the environment... if we should have been doing so THAT will be very frustrating.
Pollen counts are high... I guess there is the slim chance that both dogs have developed inhalent allergies.
Thanks again for all the thoughtful input from everyone. It is appreciated.

This thread reminded me of all my frustration with vets;
& how we have to really take control, of not only Our health, but our pets Health!
Several years ago, my High-End vet, on More than ONE occasion =
administered the wrong weight for drugs! ie, I looked when at home & dose was for 100# dog when I had a 20# dog!!
Of course, when I called it was all "that would not have hurt your dog" bla bla bla
This happened enough times, incompetense, that I am really "hands" on, & really quick to change, rotate vets!
I think you are on the rite track to still pursue mites, vs the vet saying "I don't see any"; As your constant treatments may have "watered" them down, lessened severity;
but sulfer dips on face, eye, area is just next to impossible for elimination purposes, & that is where they "hang", face area, as well as bedding, environment!
Best Luck!!

This particular vet hasn't given me the "I don't see any" line; she has explained how hard they are to find and has worked with me in trying a few different treatments on trying to get a handle on them. However, I understand exactly what you mean about having to be proactive and an advocate for pets OR family while undergoing medical treatment.
My husband always says "why do you think they call it practicing medicine??"
Thanks again Theresa.
