"so tomorrow I will (biting my nails here) allow my baby boy to drag his leash on his way to me".
For now, enclosed areas only! The chances of a pup that age, with a sound temperament, running off are not huge but it's always there.

I got it Bob - the 2 or 3 acres I live on are all fenced - but it's good to remember what you cautioned me about as I might try it when we are out - I can't even imagine how I would feel if my baby boy got hurt .. bite me, not my dogs is my motto - I know that might sound stupid but I am not going to change anytime soon when it comes to their safety

One thing with videos too Maggie, all dogs are different. The video can show you certain things, but a lot of the time you have to be ready to adapt to what works for your dog and maybe what you're more comfortable doing.
Billboard!!
what works for one dog does not necessarily work for another. If the dog doesn't seem to be getting it change your tactic and come at it from another angle.
note: make sure you're giving the dog ample time to learn the new behaviour before changing how you are training it. Im not saying if the pup doesn't get it after one session to switch.
Hope that makes sense.
Don't complain....TRAIN!!! |

My favorite cure for crying in a crate is an antler chew (along with the aforementioned kong filled with frozen peanut butter). You might look for a source of antler chews; they aren't messy, seem to last a long time, and every dog I've seen has loved them.

Thanks Wendy and you too Bryan - I am starting to think he is going to love his expen - now that he can't make it move he gets tired of trying to rip the bars apart - I expected to see blood - Without me pushing him down he figured out on his own that nothing good is gonna happen if I jump up on the side - I gave him some plastic tupperware and he is enjoying that - and crinkly bags that quilts come in - of course I do not take my eyes off him and the bags and tupperware will be good for maybe a few more days but he is growing before my eyes and soon he would be able to chew chunks out fast.
Wendy, thank you and please keep on reminding me of how each one is so different - that's what makes it so exciting to have a puppy - who knows what he going to be like for sure when he grows up - he will be trained though thanks to all the great info and advice that has been given to me here - and more importantly I will be trained!
He slept from 1:30 to 5AM - when he woke he needed to pee - as soon as he was done (with a hug for being so good) back in the crate until 6:30 - we played and walked and hung out on the deck and now he is sleeping in his expen!!!!

Oh what joy my mind, body and spirit is filled with tonight. Heiland (pronounced as high-land) is so happy and confident. He actually settled down in his expen (ahh if I won the lottery I would buy all of you who were so kind to me something you wanted) - more dogs maybe? lol.
My tiny girl ate tonight - steak which she loves - as a special treat for being so good - well, she is still mad at me but doing her best and what more can you ask?
In the few weeks, not even a month, that I have been at this site I learned more about how to raise a healthy, happy dog, cure a sick tiny girl and how kind people can be than I have ever learned anywhere else. Of course I am still floundering in putting it into action.
You took your valuable time to guide me, not putting me down for past mistakes (yes my tiny girl is fat and has allergies but thanks to advice I got here she is on her way to being healthy and lean)and welcoming me.
I wish I had found this site a few weeks before looking for a puppy in one sense, but in another, no - he is amazing.
It would be so wonderful if everyone who is thinking of buying a dog or rescuing a dog could find this site.

It really sounds like your off to a great start. I've never understood the folks that don't like raising an active, high drive puppy. They are the ones that will respond the best and learn the quickest with correct training.
....Then again, wait till he starts teething.

Hi Maggie~
Congrats on your beautiful pup!! I have also been helped a great deal by all the wonderful folks here. I have survived teething, puppyhood and even have both hands!
I just wanted to make a toy recommendation. Did you get the "Bob-a Lot"? It is an AWESOME toy, with or without food. My pup went crazy for it, more for the funny movement than the food dispensing, I think. Have fun!!
