It can be an ADDITION to the regular exercise program & training along with outside work..especially with VERY high drive dogs....especially with multiple ones in the household & even more so when the outside conditions can actually be dangerous footing for extreme drive dogs.
It's one thing to run & work a dog on wet ground or snow & another to try to work one sufficiently on ice or extremely wet ground. And I have spent many hours standing out in pouring rain & snow thru the years working my dogs. I've had my dogs hydroplane on very wet & watery areas of the field to the point of injury. I'm happy to have the tread mill to take the 'edge' off before taking an extremely high drive dog out & have them get hurt trying to run around & play or work in adverse conditions.
It is part of life if you choose to have trial ready dogs living in an area where the ground conditions are not always ideal. I no longer do SchH, but used to with my dogs & some work habits still stick.
I don't think anyone really meant relegate the dog to the basement. I'll be the first to admit that I exaggerate a bit for effect. From what I saw, the dog seemed to enjoy exercising on the treadmill, and it's a good way to burn excess energy if the dog is stuck inside most of the day. Don't forget that the dog already gets a lot of exercise (from the OP).
I think John has a good dog, at least from what I saw, but I also see a smart dog who has been allowed to get away with bad behavior for most of his six years. From what I can see, I think the dog is smart enough to learn some boundaries and manners.
I envy the land, space, and wilderness that you and your pack have. You do a wonderful job of interacting with your dogs and training them, and you are very accepting of their rambunctiousness, as you have room to let them go at it. We are not all that fortunate, and some have learned though experience that we can have happy dogs who are well adjusted to the surroundings that we can provide for them.
