Nancy and Lee, don't worry. I know you guys weren't promoting that food. It was just for conversation sake.
I should've been more elaborate myself. My dog's parents look like crap to me because they always have gunk in their eyes, smell really bad, have really bad gas, bad breath. It could be attributed to more than the Pedigree though. From looking at their ingredients, I don't see how dogs can do well on it, but some dogs do. It makes you wonder how they would've done on different food.... and a beer. JK
I had my 3-month-old GSD pup at the vet this last week and asked her opinion of feeding raw. I immediately got a frown and a "from a medical standpoint it is never a good idea...yada yada...parasites.."
Does anyone have any good reference information refuting the thought of a dog getting parasites from a raw diet?

This makes me angry, because it means either that the vet is ignorant about where dogs get parasites or that the vet is fabricating "info" to use as scare tactics.

There are dangers inherent in every diet. The giant pet food recall we all watched with horror as it unfolded and implicated company after company after company was not in any way an isolated incident; only sheer size set it apart. Just google PET FOOD RECALL.
There are potential dangers in feeding resh raw food, too. Far fewer dangers, IMO, balanced against the profound benefits to the whole system of getting real food instead of what I'll bet the vet recommends: the crap in a bag sitting in the waiting room.
That's just my own opinion. But I'm not making up stuff to steer you or anyone towards a certain diet.
Thank you Connie. I think I need to do some research, I would like to find some data, factual info on how dogs deal with the bacteria in raw also. I can see that raw pork could be an issue but not poultry in regard to worms.
This wasn't the same vet my older dog sees, but I was not surprised that she doesn't seem to be able to "think outside the box". I also got a frown because I said I didn't want my pup to receive her Rabies vac until she was 6 mo instead of 4. I started to get the spiel about "by law", but I just looked at her and she then did say by 6 months. THEN she proceeded to tell me that I need to bring my pup back in, in 4 weeks for another puppy shot (fat chance, I only had her in this time because I have to board her for a week.) and then the NEXT time we will do rabies which will put her at the end of 4 months, like that would appease me.
I need to find the thread I saw here a week or so ago listing holistic vet sites. There was a place very close to me. I think I am going to need to change vets.
(Partial quote: Dogs hold chewed food in their stomachs for 4 to 8 hours after ingestion. The low pH of the gastric juices provides a barrier to pathogens.)
This doesn't mean that it's impossible for a dog to become ill from salmonella, etc. It does mean that thinking of the likelihood in terms of the human system is extremely uninformed.
