Indeed. They're doing it with other things too, like peanuts. We're doomed. Especially eating vegan/vegetarian (I'm not vegan, but I eat a lot of vegan foods) it's hard to avoid soy and corn. But I do what I can.
There are reasons people advocate buying local. One of them is the ability to see where your food is coming from.
There is more to contamination than the prebagged foods. Produce such as strawberries and melons have been in the news recently.
It is more difficult than most people realize to clean fresh foods so they are safe.
I agree with the local food buyingif you can actually see where it is grown, all too often (here at least) produce stands have produce trucked in.

I just joined a CSA (community supported agriculture) and the farm is just a few minutes from where I work. They aren't organic, but at the very least the produce is fresh and I know where it comes from.
It always baffles me to see produce from Canada hothouses in South Florida grocery stores...can you say 'carbon footprint'?
Exactly! Why in god's name would I want to eat fruit grown in another country, and then shipped to America?
Why do that, when I have the opportunity to support a farm in my own community, which means... less eco impact, supporting American workers, keeping money out of the pockets of human rights violators, knowing where my food comes from and most importantly... eating a variety of foods, the way my body evolved to eat them.
There's something almost... disturbing about being able to eat summer melons in December.
