Ok, I was looking through my mountains of books and I picked up a copy of a "classic" off my shelf...and I got to thinking, "why hasn't some smart dog breeder done this type of book for canines?"
The book that I'm speaking of is called "Herd Bull Fertility" written by James E. Drayson. The book's author followed 1500 bulls from birth to death to evaluate fertility - it's a classic for cattle rancher's involved in a breeding program. The writer actually attempts to help potential breeder's to be able to recognize fertile bulls *before* the semen test ( and he has a pretty good record for success there ).
A book like this for dogs would be very useful in my opinion...
Have you ever read, "How to Breed Dogs", by Leon E. Whitney, D.V.M? I thought it was basic but good. If you dedicate the time to analyze the detail, there are many things that are very useful from a general breeding perspective.
I've heard that there is a bunch of dog information regarding the subject you ask about in universities, but I have never found it. It would be interesting to know about the fertility curve for different breeds through their life span. I'd guess that the more feral and un-commercial the breed (and line, within the breed), the longer they retain their fertility...and health.
I haven't read any of his dog books, but he also wrote a book on racing homers (pigeons) that I was not terribly impressed by. He has a treatise on guppy breeding as well. I hope dogs were his primary interest.
