I have almost a 12 month female GSD who still being mouthy and I am not sure how to correct this any longer. I tell her no, bad, and even harder corrections but nothing seems to get through to her, she takes it as a game.
For instance, I can be sitting on the couch and she will come over and try to give me her paw, which I don't allow then she will mouth my hands, I tell her no, then I will raise my voice and tell her no, none of this works even a good sharp tug on the scruff doesn't work, I have grabbed her by the scruff and make her whelp and she even takes this as a game. I have been training her since a pup with commands which she listens to them on a dime but I can't stop this mouthing/pawing routine.
She is not spayed yet, after her next heat I intend on doing this. She is not being trained for any kind of protection training, just a obedient companion / friend. I know a lot of this is being done for attention even if its negative but the fact of the matter is I could be sitting on the couch, on the computer, or trying to pet her and she will mouth my hands, or even when she gets excited she will run up along side of me and mouth my hands. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
I never raised a GSD pup before and don’t know if this thing is something they grow out of, I have seen many nature shows with wolves and what she does to me resembles what the pack does to greet and play with each other Thanks for any help with correcting this.
My dog's 19 months old n really really mouthy now since we've been doing bite work, I ignore it. But since your dog is just a pet, I would say, make her wear a prong collar with a pull tab, or even better, an e-collar, then set her up in a situation where she's gonna do it, so u can be ready with your finger on the button, n correct her the second she does it. With the right timing, an e-collar is probably the most effective way. That's just how I'd handle it - maybe someone else has a better suggestion?
