We had quite a scare here this past week. My mother bought each of my kids a 1/2 lb chocolate bar. The kids are older(19,17,13) and they all know the dangers of chocolate and dogs. Well seems one of the kids left the candy in a reachable spot and Kato, our 1 yr old gsd, found it and ate the whole thing. I called the vet immediately and they told me with his weight, to just watch for vomiting and loose stools. He should be okay. I got to thinking about the levels of toxicity in chocolate and came upon this website. I thought I would pass it on. Dogs and chocolate
Years ago, our Jack Russell jumped up on a table and ate a bowl full of chocolates. It was a lot of chocolate for such a small dog. She then proceeded to throw it all up in various places on our white carpet-- thus saving herself from a trip to the vet's. This was but one of many acts of stealing food she comitted. She somehow lived to be 20.
i received a gift from a co-worker last week that i decided not to open until christmas, so i put it under the tree. the next afternoon, when i got home, it was GONE--and it turned out to be (from evidence NOT eaten) a "biggest hershey's kiss"--7 oz. of chocolate plus foil.
fortunately, after some puking, both dogs came out of it ok but there're 2 lessons here: 1) notify someone if your gift contains chocolate, and 2)keep it out of reach!!!
when i worked as a vet tech in a small an. clinic, the worst(preventable) deaths were flea anemia, chocolate at the holidays, antifreeze, and maggots due to neglect (which i ALWAYS got to try to clean up--BTW--hydrogen peroxide boils them out, if you didn't know).
anyway, my dogs got thru it ok, i think only because they weighed so much vs the dose they got.
