When Deuce was returned to me by his owner he weighed 44lbs, he was a gaunt shadow of his former self, a walking skeleton! His brother all weigh 85-90 lbs. I took him to the Veterinarian were he was diagnosed with EPI.
Because Deuce was in such deplorable condition, even with the medication and special diet, he was too far gone for the treatment to take effect. His condition steadily declined. The morning of November 16th,(3 days before his 1st bithday)as I held him in my arms Deuce was put to rest. No more hunger, no more confusion.
I would like to donate the medication I purchased for Deuce to anyone who treats their dog for this same problem.
The medication is Viokase-V, manufactured by Fort Dodge.
Description: Viokase-V is a pancreatic enzyme concentrate of porcine origin.
It's a bottle of 500, although there are approximately 450 tablets left.
Each tablet contains:
Lipase.....9,000 USP units
Protease.....57,000 USP units
Amylase.....64,000 USP units
Yes, I would LOVE to try the tablets for my GSD. Kyra was diagnosed at age 2 with EPI and maintaining her on enzymes has been very expensive. Most days she is very good and doesn't seem to be overly hungry, but other days if she needs some antibiotics for overgrowth of bacteria in her small intestine, she is ravenous all the time. A sin! My daughter visited the Texas A&M University where they are doing a study on EPI and have proven recessive inheritance. It will be soon and the study will be printed from which dog the gene for this originates so hopefully it can be permanently eradicated. My heart goes out for losing your dog.
Angela ,
I had a K9 with EPI and I still work with some who have it . I am always looking to learn more about it . What are the symptoms of an overgrowth of bacteria in the small intestine ?
Thank you to all who have shown an interest. I have sent the enzymes to the first person that contacted me. I applaud each and everyone of you who take the emotional and financial effort it takes to care for these special pups.
That was very nice of you to think of others after the loss of your dog . EPI can be a difficult and expensive problem to deal with .
I take a special interest in it because I know it is often difficult at first to get the feeding and application of enzymes right for the dog in order to get the dog to start being able to digest the food properly and get something out of it . But I have seen most dogs with EPI live fairly normal lives with it once they get everything figured out .
Thanks , I checked out the sites and they are very good resources for those wanting to learn about EPI .
I joined the e-mail group also . From what I've read so far they are the most informative . I would recommend anyone having a dog with EPI to join , besides a knowledgable Vet , they would be alot of help .
For those that have Vet's that don't know much about EPI , I would point there vets to this e-mail group also . Many Vets know the how to test and to prescribe enzymes and a low fat diet to treat EPI . They don't however know the subtleties about getting the treatment right (frequency of feedings , amout of enzymes to food for each individual dog , how to apply enzymes to food , etc. ) and that e-mail site can be a great tool for them .

Everyone I know who has had an EPI dog has been relieved to join the forum and find that there were people on there who had had their *exact* challenges and knew what to suggest. The people who live with a chronic condition 24/7 are going to have insights and details that the vet generally can't.
Just one more way that the internet has revolutionized the way we share information!
