Hi. We got our puppy several days ago. On two occasions, I have noticed the puppy growl when I try to remove the leash he's gotton a hold of an chewing on. The puppy is only 8 weeks old. Is there anything I can do the next time this happens to detour the growl.
There are lots of things you can do. I would start by reading as much information you can on this site about raising puppies and establishing rank in your home. Here is a good start on the Q&A section: http://leerburg.com/qapup.htm
I would also order his Puppy DVD and Obedience at the very least. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
In the meantime, correct for unacceptable behavior. As Ed says, 1 good correction is worth 1000 nagging ones.
Thanks. I do have the video. I guess I could have said that I have removed the leash and said "NO". The second time, I picked the dog up and shook it by the back of it's neck. It let out a little yelp and I pet it after. I don't have a choke on the dog yet, just a collar. Do you think I should get a choke for the dog to give a correction? Will it hurt an 8 week old puppy? I just want to do everything right.
Which video do you have? I'll wait for the experts on what kind of collar, but I wouldn't get a choke at all. On an 8 week old pup I would try a stronger shake correction first before upgrading collars.
Thanks. I do have the puppy DVD. It's very helpful. I think I will continue with a stern "no". Other than the little growl, he has been a delight. My kids carry him around and he just lays in their arms enjoying every moment. He's doing great with housebreaking and eating well. We go to the vet again next week. I will ask him what he thinks. I also am enrolling him in puppy kindergarten class. Hopefully, he will soon begin to see me as his pack leader. I am probably just a nervous puppy owner.
