I test my dogs for worms regularily and sometimes they come back negative and every once in a while they do have hookworms. My vet says that they're from mice. As far as cutting down on food costs.... hmmmmmm.... not a bad idea natural BARF diet never thought of that.
Well, I guess dogs will be dogs and you can't take away their natural instinct to hunt.

Please verify that one with your vet. If it's hookworms, they're in the soil and are transmittable to humans. Dangerous to young children. In dogs they will cause bleeding in the intestinal system, giving a parvo like look. Not a good parasite to have around.
Danielle,
If you give your dog the Heartworm Prevention (Interceptor) on a monthly basis; this will eliminate the "occasional" positive fecal for hookworm as well as other parasites with the exception of tape worm.
Once the parasite is in the soil; it's nearly impossible to get rid of during warm months. A good hard freeze during winter will kill off the parasite larva.
If other dogs frenquent your dog's area or if you take your dog to public areas; you should be aware that this parasite larve is picked up from the dog's paws and then injested.
Mice will pass on a type of tape worm and fleas will pass on another type of tape worm.
Check with your vet; I think you may have misunderstood.
Ok, my mistake. My male had roundworms once, not hookworms. As far as heartworm prevention I don't use any. I had asked my vet about it but he said that its unneccesary because there have been no reports of heartworms way up here. And he also said there are no fleas here either. Too cold. Summer is too short and winters are way too harsh. I don't know if that's true but he's the vet so naturally I assume he knows what he's doing. Maybe I'm wrong.
I do keep the yard clean and actually taught them to poop in one spot so its easier for me to clean up after them which I do everyday.
I don't know where you are but you are very fortunate not to have the outbreak of heartworm disease in your area.
For many years; it was rare that a case was seen in this area (SE Indiana). In the last five years; that situation has changed. One in ten dogs that were never on prevention are now testing positive for the disease.
As for fleas..prevention is a way of life.
Anyone that does not test/prevent heartworm, I would recommend doing it! I never used to beleive in it because I was told by a reputable breeder that it was not necessary. Well, my dog was at a place where another dog had been previously that came down with a bad case of heartworm so I decided to take him in. Good thing I did because he tested to be in the early stages. I then took my other dog in and got the same results. I got lucky to catch it so early in both dogs. We are now the vets guinea pigs as he has never caught it this early before. Usually they have it bad or not at all. So, we gave the prevenative shot which is supposed to kill the larvea also. My GSD is in training for the AD, and he said to keep up training and keep a weekly journal of his progress. He is up to 5-6 miles and so far appears normal. We will see.
