Hello there,
after reading here for a long time, I decided to register last night. I am 30 years old, living in Germany near Cologne.
At the moment I have 4 dogs: 2 Whippets, a Greyhound and a Hovawart. With the Sighthounds I go Lure Coursing, the Hovawart has achieved the following titles: BH, AD, SchH1 & FH1 (and is German Conformation Champion ).
Since I got my first Hovawart 14 years ago I am involved in Schutzhund, from time to time I trained other people´s dogs like GSD, Rottweilers and a Giant Schnauzer.
Perhaps I can pass on some information about Hovawarts in Schutzhund, if you are intersted.
Here you see me with my Hovi Bartok (Enzo vom Amorhof)at 7 years of age: http://www.lurca.de/saalfelden/bartel_spiel.jpg
WAA HOO!!! A real live Hovawart owner!!
Oh boy....this an an opportunity in the making!
Welcome to the board, and boy......do we want to hear about the Hovawart! Honestly, I've seen only two in my entire time in SchH here in the U.S. and I'd love to learn more about them.
Ok, Will - what do you want to know? If you like to see some photos of working Hovawarts for a start, click here. These pictures were taken at a meeting in Saalfelden (Austria) in May.

Barbara & the boys

I'll second that!! I've never actually seen one in person before (as far as I know there is a grand total of ONE breeder in Canada, and that's in Quebec) but I've read a lot about them. What I read made me want to find out more!
Hey Vickie,
you cannot imagine how envious this leaves me here - hare coursing! Even in England it is forbidden since this year
My one Whippet is half american Showline (Bohem), the other one more of classic type. Both are not the fastest ones (nothing compared to real racing line Whippets), but they are still able to do their work very efficiently. And to turn on a sixpence is no problem either...
But back to Hovawarts, as this is working dog forum
Regards,
Barbara
Nice pack you have there. As a terrierman here in the states, I'm in sympathy with you on the hunting situation over there. I've also had the good fortuine to have hunted behind a few lurchers. We definately need more info on the Hovawart!
So when will you post your all-informative Hovawart thread to the board??? I've been kicking around the idea of a Hovawart in my bag of "breeds other than GSD to consider" for quite some time now, and to see someone here who actually has one is great! I suddenly have 2000 questions tripping over themselves to be asked, so please, feel free to indulge us in some Hovawart info!
Okay I'll at least ask this.. are true protection-capable specimens found in the breed or are they best suited towards protection-themed sports like schutzhund?
I'll close with this.. Bartok is stunningly beautiful!
For what it's worth Will, Raino Fluegge recommended the Hovawart to me when I was looking for an "alternative" working breed that could successfully do obedience, tracking, dope work and bitework.
It was for a fellow Police Officer that was trying to start a K-9 Unit, but whose department wanted a "kinder, friendlier looking breed" besides a GSD or Mal (even though they had no problem with the dog doing bitework. Go figure.)
Looks like a Golden Retriever and bites just fine
