Maverick is only 4 1/2 months old now but in the future I want to do protection training with him. Here is my dilema. Maverick only has one descended testicle "Cryptorchidism". Now I have read on Ed's articles that you should not neuter your male until 2 years old because they need their hormones for this kind of training. The breeder who sold me Maverick told me that he should be neutered as soon as possible because of the possibility of causing him cancer if the testicle is left that way. If I could have your thoughts on weighing the pros and cons of this.
The danger of cancer increases with age. 4 1/2mos is not too old for the other to drop either. I had a dog with this problem, and I neutered him when he was 5, as the vet recommended I do so before he's old enough to have increased complications with surgery, and before the risk of cancer is significant. From what I've read (and I've done a lot of reading on this), cryptorchid dogs' risk of cancer is definitely higher, but not so much so that they should be neutered too young. Just because a dog is cryporchid does not mean he necessarily will develop cancer; neutering is preventive, but it seems that they can remain that way for several years before the risk is greatly increased. I definitely would wait until at least 2 for Maverick-he's a large breed, and he needs the hormones for proper physical development, not only drives necessary for training. Do some research on early neutering and bone problems-there's a lot out there to support Ed's 2yr age minimum.
