I am starting the get my 10 month old german shepherd ready get his sch 1. I still have a ways to go but I am trying to get much of the foundation work done. I am having problems with his retrieve. He has crazy prey drive an will retrieve anything I throw as fast as he possibley can. But his retrieves are incomplete at this point in his training.
The problem with his retrieve is when he is racing back to me he always outs the ball about 3 feet away from me. I have be trying to get him to bring me the ball and out it on command but nothing I have done worked so far.
Does anyone have a good techniques to teach him to hold the item in his mouth and bring it to me. I want to be able to able to hold the item in his mount until I tell him to out the item.
I had the same problem with my pup, who is a pet and does not compete. I just refused to pick up the ball, would turn and walk away if needed. He learned to pick it up, come after me and try again. I also bent over and held out my hands, but would not take the ball until he put it in my hands on the out command. It did not take long for him to get the idea.
