Speaking of signals... when my boy was a pup he'd sit by the baby gate n wait for me to take him out... it's the stupid lil subtle signals that are sometimes hard to pick up on. Now my dog just waits till I take him out, n if I don't, he walks around the room making whining noises or starts tugging at bed sheets or rugs. My friends great dane was trained to ring a bell (very annoying but effective) because she would jump up on the back door n break the wooden blinds. So once you reach a point where your dog knows to "notify" you, make sure you understand what signal your dog is giving you.
