For those of you with experience with 'puppy tests', I was wondering which one(s) you like and what your general experience has been with the validity of the results?
Here's a good website with a couple of tests, the PAWS and the PAT test: http://www.malinut.com/write/paws.shtml and a link to the Flinks test score sheet: http://www.leerburg.com/scoresheet.htm
Any opinions? Thanks!
Cindy, I believe that if they're done correctly, they can point out a puppy's weakness with good accuracy.
We use a modified version of the Flinks test ( we made it a bit harder ) and it's been good to point out the more extreme puppies that we were looking for.
We've used this version of the test on three litters now with the oldest dogs just hitting a year old now and the results seem to be holding as accurate - but personally I think that you need to look at the dogs between two and three years to really find out if the puppy test results have bearing on the final product.
We use modified version of the PAT and Finks tests with our pups. Feel to send me a direct email info@stalworthkennels.com and I can send you a copy of if you like. We find the results of using a puppy test pretty good provided it is used as a guide and not the be all and end all for selection. Puppy test will, as will said, point out stregnths and weaknesses... but there are so many environmental factors that the pup will experience during the first 3 years of its life that will have a strong influence as well that you must keep in mind that the puppy test is really a very preliminary evaluation of who the pups will develop when they are older. That said, we find it a very successful means of determining which pups will 'most likely' have what we are looking for, which will be average sport dogs and which will be most suited to companion homes.... like so many other things, it is a 'tool'. Experience, good judgement of character and common sense are equally important.
