Have a 7 1/2 month old female GSD and having a little problem with her. She has always been a whiny/wimpery dog. Other than this, she's fantastic. She doesn't bark much other than when someone's outside the front door and I don't mind her doing that. She has a nice drive, not excessive but she's also not asleep at the wheel. She just whines a lot whether she's just laying there or in her crate. It's a little aggravating frankly. We walk her twice a day for an hour at a time and play with her as well. I've given her corrections using the e-collar on a low setting and also have shushed her when she whines, but she doesn't know what she's being corrected for as she isn't doing anything wrong. Can anyone give any suggestions or if you have more questions, please post and I will respond. Thanks!
Whining is more difficult to correct and eliminate than barking. I've found that with whining any attention even negative is rewarding to the dog in question and that it's best to totally ignore it to the point of not even looking at the dog and even walking away (assuming that's possible at the time). Have you started working on basic obedience training yet? And is she also on an nilif program so that she's earning what she gets and is exercising both her body and her mind?
I have purchased Ed's basic obedience video and have been using since for the past 5-6 weeks. I began working with her on basic things such as sit, down, etc. when she was around 4 months old with only praise/treats and no correction at that age. She's a great dog, loves to learn and follows commands every time. I treat and praise her when she follows commands, I use ed's vocal marker training and it works great with her. We do not give her food or praise when she hasn't earned it, she must be doing something that we want or like in order to get those.
I will absolutely ignore her when she whines and leave the room in fact. This is what we did when she would bark or act up a little bit and it works very well with her. Thanks Elaine.
