The one and only one reason (my opinion) that Czech dogs have become popular is because of the devaluation of the American dollar in the early 1990's
When the dog vendors found that they could go to Czech Republic and buy dogs for a fraction of what they could by German dogs - well thats what they did. Then they started their sales pitch on why the Czech dogs were so good.
Fact is there are some good Czech dogs. Not as many as one would be lead to believe. Over the past 15 years or so they have gotten somewhat better but they are still not the same over all quality of the German dogs.
I dont mean to insult those who have Czech dogs - I have always said you can tell someone they have a fat ugly girlfriend and they will not get as mad as if you tell them their dog is not quite up to par. :-)
Where we are now in America is into second and third generation Czech dogs. Are they better than those intially brought over? I don't know. I can say I have only seen a few Czech dogs (less than a hand full) that I personally felt were breed worthy.
My last two dogs are both from the Czech. republic. Both, IMO are very good dogs, of course I may be biased. I have compared them to some German working dogs and have been proud of their performance which could be described as well above average. I think that the handler factor has very much to do with how the dogs perform. I have seen some good German dogs with poor handlers, and we all know how that turns out. On the flip side, I have seen some average Czech dogs with good handlers and that is the only reason why the dogs were still working the road. In this area there are alot of Czech imports, mainly as Ed suggested...price. Overall though the majority were pretty good. The few I've seen from Holland were pretty good and one of our handlers actually worked a GSD which came from China. Figure that one out!
