Can a 13 month old GSD (Otto) learn to like toys? I've purchased about $50 worth of toys and not one seems to interest him. I've tried toys with varying sounds and textures but no luck. Otto is very energetic so I just want an alternative for play time.
A quick background... I adopted him when he was 10 months old and was neglected by the owner. Other than being fed, he was never walked, played with or given basic obedience training. Otto has responded very well with training during the past 10 weeks. He absorbs well and eager to learn. I just want to introduce more fun things in his life. Thanks for any input.
I had adopted a shepherd that was around 4-5 years that didn't know how to play, he didn't know anything, he's 11-12 now. I had heard rumors of his past that weren't pretty- he spent his life on a log chain. He learned to play by watching the other dogs, and eventually became obsessed with toys. He never was an energetic dog, but there is always a toy next to him and you pick it up and he comes to life and loves to fetch. Have you watched the Building Drive and Focus DVD? I kind of did that to get my pup interested, showing the toy to him and just pulling it away out of reach when he would get close, now he is obsessed, too.
I actually haven't seen any of Ed's DVDs. I've been around small dogs most of my life and this is my first experience with a large breed. I've been browsing in the DVD training section to see what's the best one to start with.
Some dogs just don't like toys, but if your dog will ever play with toys, the building drive & focus DVD will help you with techniques to appeal more to your dog. My dog played with toys as a pup but now he's not super excited about them on his own, but if I take him into the back yard n play fetch he loves it, or if I play tug... or if he gets super excited when I get home, he'll run around the house with a toy in his mouth.
