I just need some advice if I should play tug and teach my dog how to bite. My rottweiler is a 7 month old. She shows great prey drive when training her. She loves working with me and I love working with her. Im wondering if I can do most of the prey work with her. Im ordering a video off of this site Training Drive, Focus, and Grip with Bernhard Flinks. On the video below I posted one exercise with her focusing on her prey item for about 30 seconds then give her the bite command(edited it down for size), and the other is to build her prey drive up. Training Video
Any suggestions or comments are welcome. thanks, Brandon
Yes you can do the prey work with your dog. If you want advice on your training video, mine would be that you dont need to be running around. The dog to me looks like its running because you are and it isnt focused much on the prey item while you both are running. You need to be pretty much standing in one place creating prey movement with the item causing your dog to strik at it.You should be quicker than the dog and make the dog miss a few times (making it focus more and try harder) before it actually gets the bite. Once the dog has the bite a short game of tug ( with you loose in the arms) and let the dog win it from you and then trot the dog around in a circle while the dog carries the item. You will see more when you get the video, it is one very good way to build prey drive and develop bite work.
Stop making excuses for your dog and start training it!
You need to watch the Flinks tapes. Waht you are doing is wrong, you have no leash on the dog, you have another dog running around behind you, you are not moving the prey properly, etc etc etc. The video will show you how this is done.
