My friend brought his 2 yr old gsd to the vet for loose stools. The vet told him to feed his dog cottage cheese and rice for a few days....has anyone heard of this?
Cheese and rice are binding, so yes that would firm him up. However, I think I would go with the pumpkin. If your dog isn't used to dairy it could be a problem and rice is a grain and a lot of people don't like to feed grains because it's starch converts quickly to sugar. And a no no if you're a BARFer.
I've read that pumpkin benefits both constipated and "runny" dogs.
Just make sure you don't buy canned pumpkin "pie" filling. Just the pumpkin.
Thanks for the pumpkin idea. I tried it today with my pup. She loves the taste. I've had no problems with cottage cheese..small curd. Raw eggs, shells and all, have been great, too. At first she didn't think she liked the shells, but went back later to get the ones she'd spit out.
You have to be careful about not using too much cottage cheese. It can work the opposite way.
