Has anyone ever had a dog allergic to a metal prong collar. We noticed today that our puppy had a metalic ring around his neck and as I inspected closer there are spots he has lost his fur and it's like raw skin. We use the prong for training and walking, that's it. Any suggestions? Also, any ideas for a non-metal collar that works as good as a prong? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />
I've seen prong collars with the prongs tipped in rubber. Don't know much about it though. I've heard the Herm Sprenger's are a high quality metals. You could try a flat buckle collar and lot of patience. There are martingale type collars out there that I have seen used. I am sure someone on this board can give tyou more help. Good luck
Triple Crown makes a plastic prong type collar. It doesn't work as well as a nice herm sprenger prong collar, but it does work. I've used them on dogs with sensitive skin before. You also might want to consider an electric collar as another option to the prong collar.
PetSmart sell the rubber caps if you do think its a reaction to metal... but I would go with a better quality prong collar if you're having this problem before trying anything else.
While I was at triple crown, there was a lady who made cloth slip covers for prong collars. just take cloth sew it into a tube, slip it over the prongs so that it is big enough to still work, and that seemed to work well.
Thanks. I ordered a Curogan Prong collar today from the K/9 Toolbox. Hopefully, it will work because there is such a difference without using the prong. It's a struggle. We were doing so great with our prong. I can't wait till the new one arrives. I will try to make a cloth cover for it if our puppy still shows signs of a reaction. Thanks to everyone for their ideas. I really appreciate the help.
