My Rottie was in a fight a few weeks ago in which he was bitten through the ear lobe. There was a small hole which should have cleared up but never did. There was some healing, namely scabs, around the outside, yet the middle remained red raw and was obviously causing him some distress.
To cut a long story shorter, I took him to the vet, who gave him a shot and prescribed me some AB's. My Rottie seemed to get better for a few weeks but now the same problem has returned.
My guess is that when it starts healing he is scratching it...
Wounds tend to itch when they are healing, and in the process he is probably reopening the hole and getting stuff in there that is causing the irritation. If it is just red it probably won't need more antibiotics, but if it is oozing or smelly you may want to have the vet take another look.
If it is just red a daily soap and water wash and dry should help. The body is amazing and can heal itself quite well without extra crap if it is healthy.
Just think, if it doesn't heal closed, he could have an ear ring ! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />
