A member of a local dog club got a call from her vet today about her dog's Royal Canin canned Calorie Control food. I called the 800 number before posting this so it wouldn't be third-hand info. Their staff vet says that two lots of cans have been recalled because of an error in the B-3 added. This results in too much calcium being absorbed by the gut, which can lead to hypercalcemia. She said that they are encouraging (and paying for) blood tests on dogs who have been eating this food.
Symptoms of hypercalcemia include lethargy, excessive drinking and urinating, and muscle weakness.
Hypercalcemia can cause kidney function problems.
The two lots are marked with these "Best by" dates: 04/2007 and 07/2007.
