Hi all,
I'm in the UK and have 2 male GSD's a 3yr and 2yr.
The 3yr old dog ( German lines, short, broad, 78 lbs, strong willed and as fit a fiddle) started to bleed heavily from his right nostril, for no apparent reason on Wednesday morning. straight to the vet..........to cut a long story short he was refered to the local Vetenery College, He had surgery today which revealed a blood clot 12 cm inside his nose under his right eye. There is bone'destruction' caused either by tumor ( least likely), fungal infection or 'foreign body'. A bone bi-opsy has been taken to try and confirm the cause.
Has anyone here ever heard of anything similar?
I'd appreciate any input..........I'm climbing the walls with worry....Hope to get him back tomorrow.
John

John, IMO he is in the best possible hands at the vet college, where they have the tools to diagnose, and all kinds of resources. You have done the best you could and now they will do the best they can.
Please let us know the outcome.

John,
Sounds like he's getting the best of care, and I hope things work out. I hestitate a little tell you my experiences, but our situations are probably different. I went through the same thing about 6 mos ago with my 8-yr-old. He had 4-5 nosebleeds in about 4 days. During that time, I talked to the vet several times, had him there for exams, blood work and x-ray. No cause found yet, but vet had ruled out any inhaled nasal object/obstruction. On the morning I was to take him back in for some surgery and biopsy, I found he had died from bloat, probably in the very early morning hours. Vet said that it was totally unrelated, but he did suspect the nosebleeds were due to nasal tumor or cancer. I didn't opt for an autopsy. Hard for me to believe there was not as least some remote connection between the two, but there's no studies or evidence that even remotely suggest it. There was a recent thread here that talked about stress being a possible factor for bloat, but no one has studied it.
If I were in a situation like that again, I would feel much more confident with the dog receiving care and supervision at a vet's office or hospital. Please keep us posted if you feel inclined to.

John,
My experience is similiar to Mikes. I had a 7 1/2 yo female Rotty that started bleeding from the nose suddenly. I took her to the vet (The same one used for our patrol dogs) and was informed that she was anemic and had no color in her gums. They did some tests but couldn't pinpoint the problem. I was told she wouldn't last 3 days and in my mind I thought he was full of it. The vet said that I could spend thousands on her but in his opinion it would be for naught. 2 days later she was so messed up I had no choice to but to put her down. It was a sad day for the family. I hope all turns out better for you.

My old dog, turning 9 later this year, also started nosebleeding. Mostly when it's really hot. I took him in for some blood work and it also said he was anemic. The vets said it was probably cancer or something, nothing they could do, he wouldn't last. Then the vet called me later saying since I brought him from a 3rd world country that it might possibly be a sort of bacterial infection, he asked for his blood sample again, and then prescribed me with some antibiotics. I REALLY doubted this would work but since they weren't that expensive I tried that. Long story short, my dog's gums have never looked healthier, and he's so much more active now. He still nosebleeds when it's really hot but apart from that I'd be hard pressed to believe his days with us are numbered.

Hi All,
picked Diesel up from Glasgow University Vetenery Centre this morning. There has been no bleeding from the nose since the exploritory surgery, hence they allowed him home.
He's tierd but outwardly you would not know he has any problems, I had to put his prong on as we lft because of his energy........I explained what it was and why to the nurse, she looked unimpressed until I put it on and instantly the pulling on the leash stopped.
Discharge letter mentions possible fungal infection (90% of these are treatable) and 'foreign body', no mention of tumor now.
Because the affected area started to bleed as soon as the camera got close they could 'see' very little. The bone bi-opsy results will be available Wednesday as they have to wait for the sample to calcify.
Anyway I'm feeling a bit more positive today
just wanted update and thank all who replied, I was pretty low last night.

This is good that you have him back and don't have too long to wait for the biopsy.
Yes, he would be tired from the procedures. I would follow the vet's instructions about exercise, and I'll bet he feels normal again very soon.
Let us know what you find out Wednesday if you want; I know that many people will be thinking about you and Diesel.
