When a young pup has funky ears like that I would want to know why. Playing with another dog is not enough. God my two shepherds rough house daily on a farm and neither has crummy ears.
and No, I wouldn't be concerned that your vet used a q-tip. If you are uncomfortable find another vet... just know the next one may be worse.
In order for the vet to be able to tell if its a yeast infection, does he have to culture the dirt from the ears or can he tell from looking at it thru a microscope? My vet looked at it via microscope and told me 10 mins later what the results were?
Slides are a normal way of determining if your dog has yeast infections, mites, and bacteria.
Cultures are not necessary for diagnosing a basic yeast infection, but may be required if the inital treatment does not work. The culture is then used to see what THAT particular yeast is sensitive to in order to treat it. That is usually saved for the more difficult cases.
So should I be careful to not put too much cleaning solution into my dog's ears? I heard it evaporates and will dry up. On Ed's video it shows putting the solution on a cotton ball and cleaning the areas where u can still see. The vet told me to pour a small amount into the dog's ears. I am afarid if I pour too much, it can harm the ears.
pour a small amount into the ear... massage the base and then wipe the excess with a cotton ball. The dog will shake his head, then wipe again as the debris and extra fluid will be moved into the portion of the ear that you can see. The remainder of the solution will evaporate out, most are alcohol based. On a dog with normal healthy ears I do exactly as you saw on Ed's video, but when you have a yeast infection to deal with you need to clean even the parts of the ear that you can't see or reach and putting the solution in the ear to flush it is the only way.
Thanks for the advise. I put some solution in my dogs ears and immediatly he began shaking his head trying to get the liquid out. After about 20 mins, he stopped shaking. I used tissue and wiped his ear dry. I think I will clean his ear daily at least until the yeast infection goes away. The vet also gave me ear drops for him too.
