hi everyone:
I am writing to see if this behaviour has a name. Whenever my dog comes home from the vet,(today she was in for vomiting, dehydration, so they had to give fluids and restrain her), she comes home and is NOT nice to the other dogs. Basically looking for a fight. Well, today she actually started a fight with my old 12 yr mixed breed. There was no bloodshed, but my mixed breed has NEVER fought with anyone. She just went after her. It is like she is TICKED that she was handled when she didn't want to, and has to take it out on the other dogs. I stopped it by grabbing the nape of her neck and putting my other arm around her neck- had to do this because she gets gutsy and thinks she can intimidate me, and she stopped, and I put her in her crate and downed her. She is ticked at the world, I guess. Any name for this, perhaps displaced aggression- much later? The euphamism of you know what rolls down hill, comes to mind...
Thanks for any insight
Julie
you are lucky you weren't bitten. you should never grab a dog by the neck when it is being aggressive with another dog or you will certainly experience displaced aggression in the form of teeth in your arm.
maybe we could call her post-vet behavior "delayed displaced aggression" ?
with vomiting and dehydration, plus the vet visit, she's definitely under stress and is reacting to stress.
in future, don't let her interact with your other dogs when you come home from the vet. put her straight into her crate until she has calmed down.
hi:
thanks for the reminder- I wouldn't have done that, except I just had carpal tunnel surgery and elbow surgery and grasping with my right hand doesn't work well. That is usually what I do- crate her when we get home from something stressful, but sometimes when she gets out she has to go through her attitude anyway.
