I'm trying to tape one of my pups ears that hasn't come up at nearly 5 months. I've looked at the article on the website showing a pup with one ear taped and it's standing straight up. When I do it, the taped (left) ear falls to point east, I can't get it to stand upright. I'm not taping it from right at the bottom as I assume air needs to get into the ear or he'll get an infection. Also the tape and sponge insert slide up the ear and has fallen off when he moves around in his sleep. Any advice on what I'm doing wrong - never done it before and I really don't want a GSD with North East ears! Thanks.
Taping ears can be a little tricky till you get the hang of it. I have done many sets on dobe's and a few boxers over the years, but have yet to have to do a GSD. One thing that is important to do is make sure that you are holding the ear straight up as you are taping, if you are not, then when you let go the ear is going to point east as you have described. If you are not able to get it to stand up, you may consider taping the other ear and doing the popsicle stick thing until the ear gets some more strength to it.
With the sponge, as long as the ear is clean and dry you can tape all the way down without risking an infection. Just don't leave the ear taped for more than 6 days without giving it a breather.
Someone posted a site that sells inserts specifically for weak ears that looked interesting. I will see if I can find it and post the link for you.
You can use a tapeless method. Go to http://www.jbpet.com, they have the instructions and the material needed. I've used this on numerous Am Staffs and recently on my GSD. Check it out.
