Uhm, I was just reading this information on DogFriendly.com regarding importing a dog to the USA....
"Young puppies must be confined at a place of the owner's choosing until they are three months old, then they must be vaccinated. They must remain in confinement for 30 days after the vaccination."
Is this true!??? I didn't know there was a quarantine period for puppies?? If it's true I'm really really annoyed!
OK I finally found the CDC page that explains that confinement means that I, as the importer, will keep the dog confined to my house/yard till 3 months old... that's what I understand from it anyway, can anyone that's imported a puppy confirm this?
And while I'm on the subject -- KLM's regulations say that they don't transport puppies under the age of 10 weeks -- does anybody know an airline that'll ship a puppy from holland to florida at 8 weeks of age?
Yes, in the paperwork you sign at Customs you agree to keep the puppy quarantined. But- I've never seen or heard of any follow up to verify that you actually do it. Just don't brag about when it'll start training, etc to the Customs Officer!
They'll also ask what the puppy is for (family pet used to be the safest answer) and how much it's worth.
I just got an email back from DTC, they didn't really answer my question about whether you can fly an 8 week old pup, but they did send me a shipping quote so I can only assume the answer is yes. Either way, Continental and Delta both allow 8 week old pups to be shipped so there are at least those options. Shipping via DTC with pick up etc came to ~€600, more than I anticipated, but not bad.
