I read through some of the old threads on the subject of dogs & bikes, but couldn't find a definitive answer to my question:
If the "safety release" of a Springer will automatically pop loose if you tangle in a tree/post/whatever, is it safe to assume that it would also pop loose if a large dog took a strong lunge at say, a stray dog approaching?
And is it possible/feasible to use the Springer (instead of holding a leash) but simply attach it to the dog's harness or collar with a solid line?
I used a sringer a long time ago (over 10 yrs.) My dogs NEVER got loose from it, even when pulling very hard. BUT...I did have a dog that was able to pull me off my bike (they say they can't do this) with it. Also had them jump over my front wheel to the other side (to meet a dog). I don't use it anymore as my dogs work sheep regularly and get all the excerise/conditioning they need from doing that!
I do not believe that they are a good idea, especially if you have a dog that will jump or lunge at another dog while riding. this makes it dangerous for both bike rider and dog. It would best be used by a dog who has no problems with being around other dogs. I had a good friend back home who use to use one to take her GSD along bike riding with her. She broke her arm when the dog lunged over the tire to get to a poodle.
That's kind of what i was thinking. I've encountered too many loose dogs in my neighborhood on walks. If they keep their distance it's not an issue, but if one approaches us too close or acts aggressive he will turn to face them.
The main purpose for the biking is to condition for the AD, so our speed would be moderate. But the last thing I need is a "safety release" giving way and ending up with a loose dog in a fight or chasing another dog down the street - even if I have to pick my road-rashed self up off the ground before I can intervene.
