From what you've posted, it is not clear to me that you don't have a dog that would protect YOU.
Not to say you should feel confident he would, just that because one comment by one trainer, and the incident with a friend doesn't add up to him not protecting you. That friend was not his pack member. He'd never had a bite with him as a handler, he's not as bonded with him. If it was you, that hooligan might have bled, or at least been warned with a growl that he would have been charged, and changed his mind, incident avoided.
What are peoples opinion of the Swinford Bandog for Personal
Protection?
The Swinford was originally developed by a non practicing
Dentist from a wealthy New York Family, John Swinford in
the 1970's. The first ones were APBT and English Mastiffs
Crossbreeds. The dogs were originally used for dog fighting
John Swinford died in the 70'a either from a rare disease or a suicide. Several years ago, Harold Lee Robinson started
breeding using the Swinford bandog name. I've seen numerous
videos that HLR has posted and have been underwhelmed by the
dogs and the training. Does anyone agree or disagree that the Swinford is/ or is NOT suitable for personal protection?

please move if you need to :-)
Thomas,
I saw the video's also, and I wouldn't count on them for any protection, needless to say. <img src="http://www.leerburg.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />
You might want to start a topic directly in the "Protection" area for a new thread regarding this odd breed, this could be an interesting topic!
I agree this doesn't really seem like the right place to discuss this topic as it could interfere from the original topic; however, I would like to state the information posted by Thomas is incorrect concerning John Swinford. Swinford was not a non-practicing dentist. He was a veternarian that never opened his own practice. He did die in 1972.
What part is inaccurate?

Can you move this subject to the Protection section?
I can't figure how to make a new post so I did a reply here :-)
I honestly think you expect to much from this dog. At this point.
First off, a protection dog should have solid training as a constant.
2nd. The dog probably did not see you (friend) as someone it should protect. I know my dog will not protect my best friend, but it would be much more happy to protect me, it's full time handler, and pack header.
If you would like to learn more about the Swinford
These videos are made in first attempts in these scenerios and not in routine training in order to simulate realistic applications with "natural" guardian type dogs dirriving from gladiator breed origins.
Ok i read all the posts and one thing i will agree with 100% with is when Ed said no one will be able to tell you why your dog did attack. Now that being said.
I honestly do not agree at all with pets learning protection work. I know i might be hanging my self for that but ether you have a working dog, or you have a pet, there can be no 50/50 on this.
As far as why your dog did not attack it could be one of so many different things the most likely i would think would be your dog is dependent on the sleeve or the suit, have you ever used a hidden sleeve? The second is you never conditioned your dog for this kind of attack and he didn't know what to do (i.e. lack of training) and the last one that stands out to me the most is you said your friend was walking your dog? I will quote what a NCO told me once "Your dog can love you, but it doesn't mean he respects you" With that im saying sure your dog likes your friend but it doesn't mean he respects him and is going to do what you trained him to do.
