I took my dog to the vet today to have a suspicious bump checked out. The vet diagnosed it as a mast cell tumor and advised surgery soon. My greatest impression was that it could be either bad or harmless but he can't be sure. I am making an appointment with another vet to get a second opinion but I would love it if y'all could give me some info on this issue so I am not so in the dark. I just don't trust a general search on Google to give me anything good. As you can imagine I am already pretty concerned. Any books, links, info, suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

This site is the one I have found most informative on the subject of mast cell tumors.
Something like 55% of all mast cell tumors can be cured by surgery alone (called Grade 1, or Type 1, I forget exactly). There are two other grades, and they can be fast and aggressive.
So I think the vet might have been saying that it appeared to him/her to be a Grade 1, and that would indeed indicate immediate surgery, from everything I have read.
The site above explains the subject well. I have other saved references on the subkect, and I'll find them, but I wanted to get you a good one right away.
Thanks so much for giving me somewhere to start. I need to be able to keep up with the vet. He hasn't learned to speak English yet no matter how I phrase the question. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

A second opinion is a good idea,.....
Absolutely, if you have any doubts at all about your vet's oncology experience. But ASAP, because you will read in the URLs listed about the necessity for speed.
I think I'd consider asking for a referral to a vet oncologist-surgeon.
I took Bella to another vet and he identified the mass as a bug bite that had been irritated to the point of growing cells. He removed it and examined it, finding it was not malicious. Thanks all of you for your advice and information.

Wow, you must be so relieved! I was hoping to see good news from you about that.
