Anyone living in Flaorida may want to look at this
A bill is scheduled for a hearing this Tuesday in the Florida
State Senate that will require Florida hobby breeders and
rescues to be licensed as pet dealers and open their
homes to inspection.
Florida SB 674 requires any person who advertises the sale
of a single dog or cat to include their "pet dealer" license
number in the ad.
Hobby breeders and rescuers will be forced to be inspected
by the Florida Department of Agriculture, or any group it
chooses, before obtaining a license.
If this passes, the right of Florida hobby breeders and rescues
to sell dogs and cats will end on July 1st, 2006.
The DPCA LobbyNow Tool will enable you to send a customized
email to every member of the Florida Senate Committee on
Agriculture expressing your opposition to SB 674.
Here is what you can do to help (it takes less than 2 minutes):
What are the terms of the inspection? I don't know if that's a bad thing or a GOOD thing, if it were to apply to Orlando too (does it?) then perhaps I'd see less "pitbull puppies for sale" ads posted EVERYWHERE, I went by one store that had glass front doors literally plastered in pitbull puppy ads, couldn't see in the store window because of all the ads. Based on the location of this store, I wouldn't trust the breeders one bit.
I'm with you Mike. It sounds like it could be a good thing indeed. I guess it would negatively affect the decent breeders but it sounds like the up side would be far greater; weeding out the bad apples and from what I am learning on this board, there are a lot of them.
sounds good in theory, but who will do the inspecting? what about the people that will still sell dogs by word of mouth. i would imagine it would be hard to enforce it. the only way i see it working is if we stop buying from people whom are just out to make a buck and not interested in quaiity or maintaining the intergrity of the breed. sort of like prohibition, it was a good idea but you see what happened in the long run.
