I don't think that it really matter grass or dirt, but the most important thing is you must know exactly where your steps are at all time, so that you can guide and point him in the step and not let him take you on a imaginary track, and I wouldn't use the flags except on the scent pad cuz it will not take him long to learn to follow the flags and not actually learning to use his nose. If I am you, I would start on dirt cuz there is no way I can miss the steps in the dirt but I can definetly miss the steps in grass since it is much harder to see.

In the beginning (since it's just short, straight puppy tracks, I only use flags to indicate beginnning (scent pad) & end. I'm thinking that since I'm starting in the morning when it's still moist, I will be able to see my steps, but if it turns out I can't I will most def take your advise, & switch to dirt! With my last dog, I thought he was tracking so good, but at seminar got it pointed out to me he was tracking my prints with his eyes more than his nose <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> Luckily he was young at the time. Jeff is right, most dogs' are way smarter than their owners <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif" alt="" />
