I just got the report back from the vet and the 2nd opinion and it's not looking good. Is it OK to continue working my GSD with ED or will it permanently effect him in the long run and cause more issues? Here's a copy of the report.
Where's Will to put this in English? Connie maybe? The way I read it, it made it sound like all the key players are in place for him to END UP with ED, but maybe he doesn't have it yet. If this is the case, there are things you can do to protect the joints from damage caused by the OA. He also has pano, so if he's showing any symptoms of lameness, that's the likely culprit. I look forward to the medical people's perspective. This report confused me as to whether he has ED now, or is just highly likely to develop it <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />.
I'm with you, and I asked that exact question and the answer (from the vet) was "it's borderline". I was told that I should not work him though. It's a 14 month old puppy, is that too early to send the x-rays over to OFA?
It's too early; OFA only certifies at 2yrs or older. If they couldn't explain it better, I'd definitely get a 2nd opinion. I'd wait to do too much with him anyway, just because of age and size (heavy running, jumping, etc.) I had a dog diagnosed with grade 1 ED, and I was told he can do anything he feels like doing, and to give him a glucosamine supplement (or shots) to slow the degeneration. It's not the ED that causes the pain-it's the arthritis that sets in b/c of the ED. IMO, it doesn't sound like this person is an expert on OFA xrays and working dogs; I'd see someone who is, especially if your pup came with a guarantee. You'll need documentation by a qualified vet.
You can send the x-rays into OFA and they will give you a rating. They just wont give him a certification until 2 years of age.
It may be worth it to see what they say. OFA has many vets that will look at the x-rays and they do it all the time.
