I feel horrible for the woman who was bitten and the man who had to kill a dog to defend his family. It speaks highly of him that he even cares about the ruthless mastiff. This tiny woman who was walking it is obviously a moron, and too small to control the dog, even if she tried. A breakstick in this situation would be like putting a small bandage on open-heart surgery. It is HIGHLY unlikely that this woman physically was even capable of breaking this bite anyway. Like I said, I was shown how to properly use a breakstick, but was also told that I shouldn't even try it on dogs I don't know *very* well, (and be prepared to defend myself!) and I might/probably be unable to do it anyhow.
This is a classic example of irresponsibility. I can't think of too many instances where I've been glad to read that the dog died at the end of the story...on this issue, I totally agree, Barbara.
Be careful with the use of O.C. (pepper spray) on animals. Some react just like humans. Some just don’t care (just like humans). It is true that you cannot build up immunity to O.C. But, O.C. only inflames soft tissues in your eyes, nose, throat, etc. And, in order to get the burning sensation, you must contact skin directly (hair and fur don’t count). A lot of humans can fight through the pain and discomfort, so can animals.
Knife fighting, like other martial arts, require practice and expert instruction. It also requires a motivation and a knowledge that you too will be cut (bit in this case). It is not as easy as it looks on TV.
All I am saying is that: if you think you need the skills, get the training. Things are harder on the streets than on TV or even in the martial arts studio.
Oh, Chris I forgot to mention I often carry a Ruger and I know how to use it <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" /> Protection is multi-layered.
