Soon will be looking for GSD puppy. Question is... What is adequate socialization? (i.e. # of times per week puppy needs to be exposed to known dog friendly dogs) This dog will be a pet. I understand the proper way to socialize(no dog parks), just want to know an approximate number of times(very task oriented). And if he is properly trained is there a need for socialization? Want to get started off on the right foot and know what my puppy will need. Thanks for any help.

There is a thread on this board already debating this issue. Personally, I say any opportunity you have to expose your puppy to new and wonderful things is a plus. Whether a dog NEEDS socialization is a seperate issue, apparently some dogs don't. If you can take your pup somewhere every day to do something fun, or even just follow you around on errands, stay in your vehicle, then get to walk around a bit between errands in different places then great!

Thanks Mike. I had read that as an adult they need to be socialized extensively to prevent over guarding. I guess this again is debatable, just wanted to get some feedback on personal examples. Still debating between the labrador and GSD. Also, I am a busy mom of four realistically could take dog/puppy out and about twice a week. Thanks to any and all!

Hi Michelle, my sister wanted a dog and can't devote the time to the more drivey breeds so she rescued a greyhound, the dog is a couch potato and doesn't require the time and exercise etc. of a lab or gsd, just something to think about, ,

Greyhound! Perfect, Al! Michelle, seriously, if you want a GREAT dog, calm in the house, good manners, but your husband wants a bigger ("manly dog, Al has just given you the answer! If I thought one could live in my house without wanting to commit suicide from the chaos, I'd have one already!

I never thought of that, either, and I know they are very often available for rescue.

I showed a house with 8 greyhounds, and I've never been in a quieter house with a dog! *8*! Keep in mind they're sighthounds, which in layman's terms means they don't listen well at all-hand signals work better. Don't ever let them off-leash for this reason as well as the speed; calling them does little good.

I think the key to this is adult greyhound. Greyhound pups have a reputation for being difficult and from the 1/2 greyhound puppy I had, I'd agree.
Retired greyhounds are already crate trained and leash trained

I've raised multiple Basenjis, Irish Wolfhounds, Whippets, Greyhounds & Borzoi, putting them all through serious obedience lessons with my local training club -- The instructors there stopped laughing & wise-cracking, "Yeah, right, good luck!", regarding my sighthounds' trainability 40 years ago, LOL
Of course, sighthounds are bred to do completely handler-independent work while coursing (which is their true passion!) but they can be reliably obedience trained by establishing yourself as a benevolent alpha, by using the right motivation, and especially by utilizing a proper understanding of drive-thresholds <:-)
How anyone can live without a dog is beyond me... |

Thank you all! I'll give it some thought. We have some bad experiences with rescues in the past, that's why this time we were hoping to get something young and start new. I am busy, but we won't be doing school for the summer and I will have a couple of months to devote to a new dog/puppy. Thanks again!
