Johannes is fair, consistant, and a big fan of the GSD.
Yes he does show dogs. He and his wife have Sunland kennels in Bakersfield. He is one of a very few breeders who is in this for the long haul in regards to breeding GSD's of their own lines.
He is a great supporter of USA and although German feels the future of the GSD in North America lies with us not Germany.
He was a police dog handler in Germany and I first saw him in the uS back in about 82 when he was working with local law enforcement and schutzhund people.
He currently is involved in both sport and law enforcment dogs. The BNSF railroad contracts to him for their K-9 program where he and I have crossedf paths numerous times.
If you want a straight answer about your dog or the state of the GSD in the US he'll give it to you. You may not like his answer or opinion but it won't be an unqualified one for sure.
I'll show under him again for sure and my club enjoyed him here for our regionals championships in the past.

I know this reply is a YEAR late. But it's just that I've been to a Johannes Grewe seminar here in the Philippines where he did a marathon of clinics on the GSD. Regarding his perceived "preference" for show lines, I remember him saying in the seminar that he likes dogs with great temperaments, super drives, great abilities and at the optimum health BUT he ALSO likes beautiful dogs. No matter how good a dog may be, according to him, he just can't live with an ugly dog and he can't bond with an ugly dog or show affection to an ugly dog. That's HIS preference, don't we all have our own? Now those are high standards indeed!
