I have read all of the posts regarding the ecollar and if this question has been asked already and I missed it, I apologize. I have a male Doberman who is 1 year and 5 months old. Ben has been through an intense obedience class and attends once per week. Ben has also been enrolled in Personal Protection training which he also attends once per week. Ben will sit; stay, down, wave, and heel both on and off leash using both verbal and hand signals. We are working on building up his confidence in protection training. In January of this year we began using an ecollar. Ben is now only listening reliably on the ecollar. I am concerned after both reading the threads and the information on the ecollar DVD that he was not introduced to the collar appropriately. The collar is used as a "wireless leash" he is corrected on the collar as if he had his prong collar.
So… after the lengthy history (sorry).
Have I missed the window of opportunity? Can he be "reintroduced" to the collar? I have purchased the DVD but have yet to receive it. I appreciate all your help and advise.
Yes, back your training up to just doing ONLEAD obedience work for the time being -- It does take alot longer to correct bad habits (and improper training) than it takes to teach new habits the right way, but it CAN definitely be done!
Start with Ed's way of conditioning/de-sensitizing your dog to the e-collar ASAP -- He can wear 2-3 collars at once (flat-buckle, metal prong, or e-collar) while you're working on his obedience training, BUT, I would just use the prong for leash corrections right now on the short lead & the longline...
I would NOT work him offlead again until he's been re-programmed & is no longer "e-wise" -- Hopefully, some more experienced trainers here will chime in soon <:-)
I had that same problem with my bitch being "prong wise". Once I got my e-collar I began rotating the e-collar with the flat and the prong... When we would go on walks I would have her with the prong and the flat collar.. I only attach the leash to the flat and not to the prong collar. It took around 2 weeks for her not to get all worked up when she sees or hears the prong.. She now acutally looks forward for the prong to go for a walk.
I also should note that during the 2 weeks I was constantly rotating collars throughout the day with a treat given EVERYTIME.
THIS can be done.. it just needs time and patience. My friend has the same problem you have.. She's working on it like I suggested..
