I was wondering if anyone had experience with this eye disease in their dog? It's taken over 2 years to finally get the diagnosis....long story. Those who've had it, was it managed quite well with the medications? And, anyone have a good way of training their dog to hold still to get eye drops? We are trying to use food to get him to somewhat behave. We are at least now able to remove the muzzle while trying to put his drops in, but he still tosses his head around quite a bit and I am afraid I'm going to poke his eye out!
I have had two dogs that have had pannus - one siberian and one alaskan husky. In both cases it was pretty well managed with Optimune(cyclosporine)ointment. It is pretty pricey stuff
but works well to slow down the symptoms and keeps
the eyes much more comfortable. Roxy- my current lead dog gets ointment twice a day and just holds her head still and lets you put in the ointment.
If your dog is difficult try having him sit with his behind in a corner so he can't back up- then use cheese bribery. Maybe try teaching him the trick where you balance a piece of cheese on his nose and can't have it til you say ok as this might help you to teach him to stay still and have you working around his head.
Auster has pannus. Thankfully she has a relatively mild case, and it can be controlled with pred. drops. She will let me tilt her head back to put the drops in, and I always give her a treat after she has her drops. The size and type of treat depends on how good she was. I also try to avoid letting her out in UV rays since they can make it worse. I am considering doggles, but I am not sure she would put up with them.

Thanks! I am ordering the doggles myself. I live in Alaska and with all the snow glare and 24-hours daylight in the summer I think it will be better. Do your dogs have those discolorations (spots) on the iris? It looks pretty strange and I can't believe the eye specialist didn't figure this out right away. Those spots started 3 years ago and he told me they were congenital, but "shouldn't grow". Duh......if they are congenital they should have been there at birth. He comes up every 6 months and now he says, yup they are growing, plus he's got plasmoma of the 3rd eyelid in addition and several new spots starting. So now we are doing the cyclosporine drops and an eye ointment (NPD I think). He is getting better with the treats already.
doggles? - and where would one purchase these little babies? I'm picturing my lead dog wearing something very sporty looking <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />
