I've been doing some checking on costs for total hip replacement for my dog and have been staggered at how much they charge here.
So far I've been quoted £2500 for ONE hip (that's roughly $5000).
Has anyone here had to have this procedure done on their dog and could I ask roughly what was paid?
I'd especially like to hear from people in Europe as I may be willing to travel should treatment be required!
I'm jumping a bit ahead of myself here as my dog hasn't actually been diagnosed with HD yet but there's a fair chance he has it I'm told. Need to wait until next week before I can get X-Rays done.

Lets' see, when I had my dogs' hip replaced (1 hip over 4 yrs ago). We ended up paying around $10,000. This includes all the tests leading up to , the actual surgery, medication post surgery, etc. This was in California
At what point do you need to replace a dogs hips?? I'm scared to get my dog X-Rayed because he seems fine so I don't wanna go looking for trouble -- but hypothetically, if I were to find out he had HD, which he probably doesn't, then at what point should I start looking at hip replacement??

When the pain becomes such that the dog no longer has a good quality of life. In my dogs' case, he didn't need hip replacement until he was over 10, but he had mild HD. Up to that point he showed no signs of pain, was very active including LOTS of swimming. I had him x-rayed at 2, so I was prepared, & treated him accordingly. There is a lot that can be done now, besides Total Hip Replacement, and as they say, forewarned is forearmed!
