I am thinking about purchaseing a Martingale lead from Leerburg.
I believe
(1) The collar portion is a slip collar that can not be backed out of by a dog with a narrow head.
(2)The collar only tightens to a certain point and will not choke the dog as a choke chain will.
Are my assumptions correct?
The collar portion is not a slip. It can slip over a dog's head if the collar fits too loosely.
Picture a 'U'. At each end of the 'U' is an O-ring. Now take a chain. Feed the chain thru each O-ring. Then connect the two ends of the chain with another O-ring. This O-ring is for the leash clasp.
At rest, the collar should fit snug but not tight. If you pull the leash clasp O-ring, and the two ends of the 'U' touch, the collar is too loose, and the dog could slip out from the collar.
Personally, the martingale is the only "regular" collar I use. There are no parts to spring open like a snap collar can. And you get the benefit of the collar closing-in, rather than a collar just pulling in one direction as a fixed sized collar will.
Thank you JJ for the reply. If the rings touch when pulled the collar is too loose and can pull over the head. If the collar is adjusted properly and the rings do not touch, the collar will tighten when pulled and will not pull over the head. Is my understanding on this correct?
It's important I get this right. I have a collie. The narrowness of their head makes it almost impossible to get a buckle collar tight enough to not slide over their head if the dog is pulling backward. This happened to me the second day I had him. Luckily we were in a fenced area. I never take him out of a secure area in a buckle collar. This is why I need a proper understanding of this collar before purchasing. Thanks again.
