Does anyone own a longhaired gsd, If so how many times do you brush your gsd? Boz is 3 yr old, we got him in Danville,IL from some people who wanted to get rid of him due to wifes allergys. He is doing good with the basic training. Just a little to fiesty with my senior dog, but they dont actually fight just snarl and bark at each sometimes. He is 28 inches at the shoulders and pretty long. loves to run after his bone, not so much balls. If anyone has a longhair please let me know?

Angela, I have a 12 month old long-haired GSD. I groom him everyday. If I don't, the tumbleweeds would overtake my home ! Fortunately (or unfortunately) I have hardwood floors in my home so it makes it very easy to see the dog hair lying around. I can't stand to see it so I spend 5 minutes every day brushing his coat and another 10 vacuuming !

Yeah I started brushing him more too. I also give him his salmon oil with his food. And it seems to be helping his coat. Never had a gsd before, mom has a black one that is 120lbs and bigger than boz. thanks for your input.

Salmon oil is excellent for coats and since it has omega 3 fatty acids, good for heart health as well. My three get a fish oil capsule a day and they think it's a treat. Your mom has a 120 lbs GSD? Is it overweight for its frame at all? German shepherds, especially the ones from American lines, are plagued with joint issues and adding extra weight to their frame makes it worse. It's much better to have a dog on the thinner side than the other way around, especially with dogs known for orthopedic problems like GSDs, Great Danes, golden retreivers, labs, etc. People have asked if my Malinois is a greyhound/GSD mix because he's very lean, but my vet raves about what good shape I keep the dog in.

Is this really a GSD, or is it a Shiloh Shepherd? Shilohs can be huge; the dog might not be overweight. They have their share of health issues anyway, though . I have read lately that the long hairs don't really shed any more than a stock-coated dog blowing its undercoat; the hairs all over your floor are just longer.

As far as My gsd, i think he is. my moms gsd is american, and yeah he has joint problems, but he is on meds and is doing much better. He is huge for a gsd. Her dogs name is TRACERS MAGIC SHADOW aka shadow. He is from a breeder in WI. Dont know which one though. They got him for free when he was a couple months old(other owners didnt have the time for him) but no one goes near them unless they know them. Especially where they live alot of pitbull fights and stuff like that. As far as BOZ is concerned all I know is that they let him roam the area and only let him in the house for an hour a day, the rest was either in the crate in garage or a small kennel outside in yard. It was hard to get him used to being inside but he is accustomed to it now. (we have alot of coyotes and a really hugs hybrid of something roaming around)

Mine is what I think they call a long stock coat - he has tufts behind his ears, etc. and longer guard hairs, but still has a thick undercoat.
pics
The long hairs shed, the undercoat is what comes out when I brush. Jenni's right - he doesn't shed any more than any other GSD i've seen, the hairs are just longer.
I try to brush once a week at a minimum, but I've gone a couple weeks (rake broke and then was out of town). He was looking pretty dirty and LOTS of undercoat came out, but that's it.
