Im trying to teach my dog to keep the toy in his mouth until I tell him to give it to me.. He'll take it and hold it for a few seconds but then drops it. I'll tell him to pick it up and he will, but then he drops it again.
If I throw it for him, he'll bring it back and drop it in the area that Im standing.
How do I get him to hold it until I take it from him? Im sick of bending over to pick it up.
Run a cord through the hole and knot it at the end so that the toy is now on a cord/ string.
Use the cord and the new motion that is available now to frustrate the dog to increase his drive for possession of the toy on the string.
When the dog takes possession of the toy, try to pull it out of the dogs mouth - if you're successful, re-start the prey work and *frustrate* the dog....
Eventually, the dog will learn that it must maintain a good grip on it's play/prey object or else it will lose it.
And as long as you maintain a good grip on the string, you won't have to bend over.
FIRST: Everything Will said was 110% right, but I'll just add my 1/2 cent here.
Sometimes those balls can be to huge for their still growing mouths as well so make sure it is no more than 2.5" inches in diameter. In addition, make sure the material is a soft rubber. I have the Orbee ball and it works well. Also, don't pull up too much on the ball or you'll just be pulling it out try to keep the pull level with the dog and that will promote that better grip to start off with if the dog is still a pup. I use to yank my ball up and toward me, but that would just cause my pup to have to let go and that is a bad thing. I have changed to just pull it away from him and keeping it level. The new way has really worked out well for me.
GOOD LUCK
